Developers in Arequipa, Peru got together to rebuild the MissionsHub.org website in a single day. An event we called a Hackathon. We were joined via Skype with developers from Lima, the capital of Peru, along with a developer from Canada and a tester from Malawi (Africa). We had experienced developers along with students who were there to learn. Meet them here...
The day was crazy! I made the mistake at this point of not getting the website installed immediately when we started. I really wanted the students who were coming to see the install process and I thought we should wait for at least one to arrive. So we had five developers who called in asking what they could do and the site was not ready. Fortunately they were patient as we frantically installed the site.
Things got easier from here. Three developers got consolidated into a single Skype chat - I had to learn how to do this. The developers from Lima could understand English so it didn't matter when I got confused between speaking English and Spanish. Carlos Jose, from Arequipa, worked on a ,"responsive," web design - one that works on phones, iPads and desktops by responding to the different screen sizes.
At the end of the day we had completed about 80% of the functionality but the remaining 20% will be time-consuming. We will get done slowly over the next couple of weeks.
Our aim is to build a website that will help connect people with what God is doing around the world. For us the process is just as important as the final outcome.
